How can girls contribute to the environment?

by - 6/05/2020

Happy World Environment Day! Mother nature is not not exclusive to any gender, caste, species or kingdom. It has and would continue to nurture us (animal, plant and microbiological kingdom) with all its resources. But like every mother, our earth needs care and pampering too. Let's take a pledge on this World Environment Day that we each one of us would do our part in taking care of our mother nature.

Why does the title say only girls? Isn't it a combined responsibility of every citizen of the world? Well because I am going to talk about something that can be solved only by girls/females. Every female in the reproductive age needs disposable pads or tampons and that is a big non biodegradable environmental hazard cumulatively. It is estimated that a female creates 300 pounds or 136 kgs of female related waste in a lifetime. Now you can calculate how many gazellions of kilos of waste all the females of this world are creating each day! This has to stop or come down somehow. The answer can be cloth pads, biodegradable pads and menstrual cups. However the awareness has to spread and that's why I am here to motivate you to switch to menstrual cups. I have the one from Everteen,  which offers India’s largest range of premium sanitary essentials for complete feminine hygiene.

What is a menstrual cup?
It's a small cup like structure made of medical grade silicone that is inserted inside the vagina to collect the blood and has to be taken out after a duration of 6-8 hours, drained and inserted again for the next shift. It's completely safe and liberates you to do all activities including swimming and yoga.  The everteen Menstrual Cup is highly comfortable to wear and gives you the freedom to perform all your favorite sports and outdoor activities. You can lead a smell free, rash free period.
What is Everteen Menstrual cup made of?

everteen Menstrual Cup is a quality product from everteen. It is made of medical-grade silicone, the everteen Menstrual Cup is soft, easy, 100% safe to use and does not cause skin irritation.
Now here are a few important FAQs.

Does the same size fit everyone?
The large menstrual cup can hold up to 30ml of fluid and is recommended for normal-to-heavy flow to give you leak-proof protection for up to 12 hours during periods. If you have lighter periods, you can use the Everteen Menstrual Cup in small which can hold 23 ml of blood. The large one measures 16 × 11 × 11 cm and weighs 0.215 gms. It comes with a silk pouch in which you store safely.
Can a virgin use a menstrual cup?
Well a menstrual cup can be used right from the time of menarche. However the vaginal walls are tighter in younger girls so the insertion may be a bit more difficult. It would require repeated practice though to become accustomed. A menstrual cup can rupture the hymen but so can rigorous sports activities. I have young female patients (sexually inactive) who are very comfortable with menstrual cups.
Does one need to wear pads along with the cup?
Well that's the best part about cups. They are practically leak proof and once you are accustomed, there would never be any tension. However in the beginning you may use panty liners for added protection.

Advantages to the environment: The Everteen Menstrual cup will last you for around 10 years (if taken care of properly) That means no female waste contribution to mother earth!

Price: 455 INR . It turns out to be very economical in the long run.

Available at everteen.co.in and at all major E commerce sites.

Pro Tip: It may take 3 to 4 cycles to become fully accustomed so don't try the cup once your periods start. For a smoother experience, try using it (the art of inserting and removing) few days before your actual date.
So girls this World Environment Day, let's take a pledge towards cleaner environment. Of course planting trees plays a mammoth role but let's try to reduce pad related wastes as much as we can.

Have you tried menstrual cups? How long have you been a convert?
