When I think of Kerala, just two thoughts cross my mind...more than 90% literacy rate and backwaters. Backwaters always fascinate me. I have experienced them in Chilika, Orissa, but they are not that famous. The Chilika Lake is the largest lagoon of Asia but its because of the laziness of Odisha Tourism that people don't know about it. Moving on, I was pretty impressed by the backwaters of Goa. Again people don't think of backwaters when in Goa. However the mangroves and the houseboats are equally good. Therefore, I was not new to backwaters. But still my travel history felt incomplete till I experienced them in Kerala.

The backwaters of Kerala start from Kochi and extend till the South. Allepey is the place where they are of utmost importance. Basically these are brackish lagoons which lie parallel to the Arabian Sea. They contain fresh water from the rivers mixed with water from the Arabian Sea. As a result, its ecosystem is unique as the flora and fauna are mixture of marine and freshwater.
We were on a very short trip. Just 5 days for Kerala is not enough. That too when the anchor destination was Kochi. However we tried to squeeze two day trips along with exploring Kochi: Alleppey and Munnar. Alleppey was on our second day.
Our port of call was just around 60 kms from our hotel and our cab driver assured that we would reach withing 2 hours because of the morning traffic. Thankfully we made it before noon and just after that the sun was at its best.
We earlier had plans of spending a night on a houseboat but then we changed our minds. Firstly we had already booked 5 nights in Kochi. Secondly the houseboats are really expensive. Thirdly we had heard too many negative reviews like the air con is not efficient and the lagoon stinks etc etc. So we just decided to explore the backwaters on a shikara.
Since the backwaters are an amalgamation of flora and water, the humidity is intolerable. However as soon as you step into the boat, the pleasant breeze wins you over. The place is quite commercialised as every boat owner tries to woo you. We did not book the shikara from the main place...they were quite expensive. Instead, we went to a lesser known area and sealed the deal. We booked the shikara for two hours of ride. As soon as we got into the boat and started rowing, the weather and the views got better and better.
Green has been my favourite colour since childhood and I could not be happier with the surroundings. Also numerous houseboats here and there enhanced the beauty of the place. As we rowed farther, all the boat to ourselves, me and daughter had the time of our lives while hubs photographed every little detail he could.

There are a very few places in North India that I have not been to. Having said that the Himalayas never cease to amaze me. I have been to almost every corner of Uttarakhand and still I can revisit the places again and again. It had been quite a while that we had been to somewhere. All of a sudden, my parents surprised us with a trip to Nainital. I had been to this city of lakes twice before; but it was my first time with the husband and my daughter and hence I could not be more excited!
There are two main things that set this place apart (and hence more beautiful) than rest of the Himalayan towns. First, the huge Naini lake and secondly the omnipresent clouds! There are only a handful of towns in India where you can watch the clouds floating up close and personal. Meghalaya (the land of clouds), Darjeeling and of course Nainital. Sometimes the clouds are so dense that the background simply vanishes! They are like a riddle!
The morning we reached, we were dead tired. My parents reached there two days before and we two days later. The reason being we had already booked our staycation in Sohna. Being exhausted did not however deter us from exploring the place the moment we arrived. We freshened up, handed over our munchkin to her grandparents and off we set to explore the place! Luck, however, did not favour us.
Its rainy season already and the scenario is worse on the hills. It had been continuously raining in Nainital and it was freezing! We decided to walk along the lake and the clouds were plaaying peek a boo with us. We could not even try out boating as the visibility was very low. Although playing with the clouds was a mesmerising experience altogether! The next two days were better and very soon I would be sharing all the interesting spots with you.
Coming to the outfit, I chose a baby pink tee with the perfect words: Lets Just Go! These favourite words of mine are available on PrintOctopus

I am a person who has been in love with Delhi as long as I can remember. The perfect amalgamation of technology and historical sites makes Delhi an ideal place to live. Also there are many places nearby that offer the perfect weekend getaways. A hop, skip and ride and voila! You enter a new state and hence a different culture.
Its been quite a while that we went on a vacation. I mean there have been road trips now and then; but not a real vacay. Short raod trips really tire me out. I have to pack for my daughter; every possible thing that she can throw a tantrum for. Also lets not forget about food. She is a real FUSSY eater and she literally starves until I shove her staple food (made by me) down her throat. Not to forget carrying a naughty three year old in my lap throughout the journey is an ordeal in itself. In short, I desparately needed a BREAK!
My birthday had been really low key; with no special celebration whatsoever. I was in fact cross with my partner for the same. It took quite a while for him to understand that though. So he surprised me with this weekend trip to Sohna.
Sohna is around 65 kms from our place ie Noida. Its named from Sona (Gold) as gold dust was found in the stream sand after heavy rains. Although the place is famous for its hot springs and Shiva Temple; for Delhiites its known for its five star resorts. And what I needed is a stay in one of them!
We relaxed in Westin Resort which is a very beautiful property. I ate, drank, slept and layed by the pool. At least for the weekend, I did not have to cook or wash or clean or work! Ah! I wish my life could be this easy, every damn day!

The famous Fisherman's wharf of Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore was the last village of our Cinque Terre trip. The sad part is that I had a lot of plans for this place but could not fulfill them as it had got dark. After the grueling hike from Manarola, all I wanted was to relax and absorb the beauty. I did that; no doubt but since we were out of light, we could not take pictures.
Riomaggiore has a long fisherman's wharf. I had seen so many pictures of this area that I was very fascinated. It was dusk when we reached and we could not really figure from where we should start clicking. We tried going to the starting point of the Lover's Lane or Blue trail so that we could get an aerial shot of the village. We started walking uphill without keeping track of anything else. By the time we reached a preferred spot, we realised it was deserted all around. It was almost dark and it was a secluded spot in the hills, overlooking the Ligurian Sea. Suddenly all the warnings regarding mugging in Italy started flashing on our minds. We froze in fear. The sun was going down into the Ligurian Sea; and as soon as the sunset was over, we started our way back. The path was rocky and slippery and it was dark already. Our apprehension knew no bounds.

As soon as we started seeing passerbyes, we slowed down. I then started absorbing the beauty of the Italian alleys. It was our last day in Cinque Terre and I was already nostalgic.
We had a late lunch...almost an early dinner in Manarola. Hence a full dinner was out of question. However I could not resist some Italian knick knacks. So we got a huge pizza piece and a gelato.
We strolled near the railway station till long..gazing at the stars. It was our last night there and we reaped it full advantage.
