It is a well known fact that Varanasi   one of the oldest living cities in the world, lies on the banks of our beloved ganges. But what is not usually known is that Ramnagar, a quaint little city, lies on the other side of the ganges. Though culturally very similar to that of Varanasi, It has its own individuality too.

Ramnagar is just a ferry away from varanasi, just fifteen minute boatride. But during the rains when the ganga is overflowing, the usually enjoyable boat ride makes you pray for your lives!! There is also a bridge across the river which makes Ramnagar more accessible through automobiles; but nothing can replace the fun of having a joyous boatride!!

Apart from numerous temples, the most famous attraction of ramnagar is the Ramnagar fort. It was built in 1790 by Kashi naresh ie the king of varanasi. The current king used to reside here before his demise few years ago. In fact my husband and his friends have actually met the King of varanasi!! Royal stories have always fascinated me!!

Other than the fort, The Ramleela of Ramnagar is world famous!! Though I have not experienced yet. Firstly because I cannot afford to miss Durga Puja. Trip to Ramnagar would mean being far from my very own Durga Puja. Secondly, I am a bit claustrophobic. The thought of myriads of enthusiastic people makes me dizzy!!

Recently, this city came into limelight as the blockbuster Raajhanaa was shot here.
Lastly for a foodie like me, ramanagar's lassi is very famous!! The creamy whipped yogurt makes my day!! But my most favourite part of this little city would always remain the fort!! Love the architecture, love the breeze, love everything!!

just love the cool breeze blowing across my face!!

is not the view wonderful??

The inside. There are lots of cannons and other arms and ammunition, but I like sticking to girly stuff!!

the entrance of the fort...

durings rains, the water level reaches upto the door. This is a private way to the river for the females residents of the fort..

love the architecture and the huge doors!!

Doors have always been my favourite props to pose with!!

I think I had  already professed my love for october  citing enough reasons for it!! After a week long hectic and funfilled Durga Puja  celebrations, its time to cherish the birthday of my husband!! This year too was celebrated with the whole family; my inlaws had especially come all the way to see their son turning a year older.

This birthday has always bore special significance in my life... apart from the fact that its my life partner's birthday. Before we got married and the period after our engagement;i.e the scariest time period of any relationship :p that is in the year 2010, something weird happened. I was trying my level best to impress my inlaws (parents and his older sister) without losing my own self (though very difficult) and there my fiance was ruining everything unintentionally. He was trying to show them my very best, but somehow everything got screwed.

That year his birthday was on the first day of navratri. Usually on this day devotees fast and so were my inlaws..including his 5 year old nephew. I had planned an elaborate lunch with my fiance at Geoffreys after a day out. His parents and sisters were travelling all the way from Meerut to meet us and were not supposed to reach before evening (well according to my fiance). As we were about to enter the restaurant, I was constantly asking him to get updated about his parents' whereabouts. And he was constantly assuring me that they wont start their journey without informing him. I believed him, and then ordered. As soon as we finished ordering, His parents called saying they had reached Delhi. Oh my God!! I immediately got up saying that we should cancel our order and go to them. We were in South Delhi and they were in central Delhi. The drive would take atleast an hour at that time of the day. My poor fiance was torn between impressing his would be wife and being a good son. Well one cant have the cake and eat it too!!

We quickly polished off our plates. I had intended to change my outfit for something more appropriate, something for an ideal daughter in law. But we were in such a hurry that I simply skipped that part. His phone was continuously ringing, his sister demanding to know about his whereabouts and he was dodging answering anything clearly!!

By the time we hit the ring road, it was jam packed with traffic!! Frustrating as it would be, we were helpless. I was particularly feeling guilty for his nephew, who must have been famished and needed to break his fast immediately. It took two long hours to reach Central Delhi, and they were fuming in disappointment and hunger. Eyes popped at my garb, but everyone was too tired and famished to say anything!! We immediately took them to Haldirams and everything settled down. I would never forget his first birthday in my entire life!!
Well this year, thankfully everything went nice and smooth!! Thank God!!

After week long festivities, its time to relax!! I had a crazy time having fun during durga puja  and so today I need to write about a laid back vacation which makes me crib about my mundane life!! Whenever I think of anywhere pampering or luxurious, only one place comes to my mind...Mauritius!!

The pristine beaches, turquoise waters and the amazing beach resort...all redefine divinity!! I may sound a bit partial towards Mauritius as it was my honeymoon destination, but believe me it deserves my every word of praise that I have for this place!!

We had a week long retreat at the Hotel Ambre which is situated on the Palmar Beach in Belle Mare. When I had reached our resort after a week long intercity wedding and reception followed by an eight hour flight followed by a hour long drive through the winding pathways, I was in no mood to enjoy my arrival. I was sitting half dead in the reception as hubby was filling out the details. But as soon as we were taken to our room and my tired eyes fell on the Indian Ocean, I was immediately recharged!! I just jumped in joy at the sight of the turquoise water!! Hubby was taken back indeed at  my sudden and drastic recovery!! But of course he was more than happy...after all, who wants to start ones's honeymoon with a sulking sick wife?? :D

The following pictures are from a leisure day..that is when we did not go for any sight seeing and were lazying around. We started walking on the resort part of Palmar beach to the pulic beach gradually. The skies were absolutely clear when we started, but suddenly it became overcast and began to pour horrendously!! We could not even run for cover and got drenched in distilled water instead of saline!! :D Due to the cloud cover during the dry half of our stroll, the photos did not turn out as I would have liked them to be!!

love the view of the sea from our resort...

thats my favourite hobby..getting drenched in sea water...

after frolicking around, its time to relax!!

trying to emulate a famous Bollywood movie scene :D

really wonder how these shrubs managed to grow in the sand!!

the overcast sky playing spoilsport :(

hubby and his animal antics :D

this is what my husband calls me...no longer a secret :p :p

PART II
Its the midst of navratri and here I am already posting about its culmination!! Well the reason being that already I am so tangled with the festive celebrations, hubbys birthday and taking care of my in laws that I could not risk missing posting this on time!!

I wont get into the story telling part of why and how dusshera or Bijaya dashami is celebrated. But I would like to share a very funfilled ritual of ours...Shindoor Khela. This ritual is exclusively for the females..and the men enjoy watching their wives, daughters and sisters indulge in this playful colour act!!

Shindoor (as it is spelt in bengali) or vermillion is a red pigment worn by married women on their foreheads as a sign of being married. On the last day of Durga puja, in the morning, before the idol is immersed in the water, women smear shindoor on each others' faces after paying respect to Goddess Durga. Its said that when young unmarried girls get this 'colour treatment' by the elders, they get married early!! :D I know it may sound alarming for few..but believe me...some girls actually love it!!

The following pictures are of Durga Puja 2011 ie my first puja as a wife. So that year was very special for me!!

me paying respect to Lord Ganesha...

my father with the "dhak"(kind of drum) and my childhood friend Amit...

me waiting for my turn to pay my respects...in the meantime, getting clicked :)

and the play begins....since I am a newlywed, everyone wants to smear me!! here is my childhood friend Amit's mother colouring my face!!

standing with the colourful ladies...

me with my mom...

this is one of my fav pics!!

the men having a blast indulging in beats!!

my mom wanted to capture this moment forever!!
All the above pictures had been taken by my friend Amit as my hubby was busy in his hospital and my mother (who is my second photographer) was busy with me!!

However last year, I made sure that my husband witnessed his wife's face getting smeared with vermillion!! I just hope this year he ditches his hospital and stays with me!!

last year's picture...I finally managed to get clicked with my husband!! My cousin brother took this!!

standing outside the pandal gate!!

A very happy Dusshera to all of you in advance!!

The red and green saree that I had worn had been gifted by my mom in law :D

Part I

So October is finally here....the official start of fall. Well here in Delhi,India its not fall exactly. The weather in Delhi is very much black and white. The summers are scorching and the winters freezing. There is nothing like spring or fall as such. So why does October excite me so much?? Well with October I have so many things happening in my life that its one my favourite months of the year ; well after June of course (my own birthday month ). The birthday of two of my two favourite persons fall in this month: my hubby and my bestie. Well I have been celebrating my bestie's birthday since eight years and hubby's since the last three years ( I met him in 2010 only). But I have been waiting for October since I was a tiny kid as far as I remember. Then why?? Because its the month of my favourite festival...the week long DURGA PUJA!! Being a hard core Bengali,I have grown up celebrating this festival with pomp and glamour. Being married to a banarasi,
the time of Durga puja is the time of navratri; and for them its the time for pure worship and devotion. However, when I used to address Durga puja as a week long party, my inlaws could not imagine until they witnessed themselves. Donning the latest in fashion everyday, devouring the tastiest of street foods from the stalls, enjoying concerts all night long, its nothing short of a grand week long extravaganza!! I should not be saying this, but the worship and devotion part occupies a very small place :D

The puja starts with shashti meaning sixth and then there is Saptami(seventh), Ashtami (eighth), navami (ninth) and the the culmination with Dashami (tenth). There are a lot more ceremonies preceding and succeeding these 5days but not that important.
This year, Durga puja is starting from 10th of this month and I cannot wait!! Today I am going to share with you last year's pictures from my Pandal hopping spree. We visit various pandals around to decide which Durga Idol is the best!! The next post I will cover dashami, which is a unique ceremony in itself!!

the beautiful sculptures in the pandal...

one more beautiful idol...

this pillar makes me feel so tiny!!

me with my cousin brother...eating our heart out!!

since this is the time for worship, my mother in law was not too happy when she saw this picture of me having fish and chicken!! One is expected to stay clear of meat during puja but its not so in the case of bengalis!! :D

this grilled chicken was simply too good!!

small kids performing on stage...I used to dance too before too many responsibilities got hold of me!!

one more artist's wonder!!

me with my favourite prop...balloon!! I love the ceiling work!!

this is the pandal gate of my neighborhood's puja...

one of my favourite idols!!

this pandal is in the shape of a famous movie theatre of bengal...

this one got the award for the best eco friendly pandal...

the favourite idol of my life till date... this one got the award for the best idol...

I just love the dim lighting and the artifacts!!

I just hope this year I enjoy even more than what I did last year!! My inlaws would be visiting this time and I plan to acquaint them fully with my culture!! fingers crossed!!
