Whenever we think or speak of Dubai, what comes to our mind?? gigantic skyscrapers, state of the art architectures, plexus of flyovers and other world record breaking things. But what we do not ponder upon is what this city originally was. Dubai could not have been this since ages. Located in the midst of Arabian Desert, it had nothing which could support life. It had only millions of gallons of oil reserves to boast about. Well we all know that its history now and how these Arabic people have defied every natural obstacle with technology.
I have always been fascinated with past. Be it a person or a place, I feel that unless one knows about his/its history, the information is always half baked. I am in habit of digging up even the forbidden past!! scary..is it??
When I visited Dubai, I was intrigued to know how this city looked before. Given the pace of exponential urbanisation, it was very difficult to find out something absolutely authentic. However, when I started for city tour, our first stop was the Dubai Museum and I was overjoyed!!
The Dubai Museum is situated in the AL FAHIDI fort. This fort is supposedly the oldest standing structure in Dubai. Built in 1787, it has been preserved carefully so as to protect the city's heritage. Entry ticket was of 5 AED and all my questions were answered as I started touring inside the museum. :)
Inside the fort, there is simulation of the lifestyle of the Arabic people that existed hundreds of years ago...the houses in which they lived, the weapons they used, the kind of villages...everything that was possible to be simulated. In a nutshell, it gives you a tour of ancient Dubai.
p.s This is the only museum in my life where photography is allowed in every nook and corner. Isn't it delightful?? :D
