I have professed my love for Delhi time and again. It’s the hub of different cultures and the perfect amalgamation of history and technology. There is a new place to discover in Delhi everyday. So whenever I and my husband are free, we select a new location to explore. Its usually my job to do the research and guide him to a new historical site.

But miracles do happen!! It was a winter afternoon when I was doing my post grad. My classes got over at 3pm when suddenly hubby called for a surprise visit. Usually he is very busy at this time of the day so I never expect him to call let alone a visit!! He dropped by my institute and made me walk kms to Old Hailey Road after a quick meal!! Yes, for once, he had done the research and there existed a place which I had never heard of … ‘ Ugrasen Ki Baoli’ !!

Baoli means stepped well. This was built in the 14 th century by Raja Ugrasen, forefather of the Agarwal community. However, the architectural features resemble the late Tuglaq period.

This 14th century structure is believed to be among the 'finest' baolis in Delhi because of its innovative designs. Built with rubble and dressed stone, it measures 60 meters long, from north to south and 15 meters wide at ground level. The main feature of the structure is the long flight of steps flanked by a thick wall with two series of arched structures, the lower ones submerged under water and the upper ones just above the surface of the water. These steps between the walls lead down to the water level.

This baoli, which is named after Raja Ugrasen has a legend that any Aggarwal new to the area could call on his fellow Aggarwals for help. Every person of the community would help him by donating a brick and a small sum of rupees. Likewise he would help the next person of the community in need.

Situated amidst the modern high rise buildings, the entrance of the baoli has vanished by now but the baoli still serves as a pool in the summer and one can see washing spread out to dry over its arched walls. Ugrasen's Baoli is a fascinating remnant of Delhi's history in the midst of the modern heart of the city.

blown by the wind...

Winters are so irritating!! The chill just does not seem to spare us!! Today it rained too!! Like here, today also I would like to recapitulate a bright sunny day of my sunny vacation.

As said here, people tend to associate Dubai with only sky grazing architecture, luxury and gold. But we often tend to forget that it is blessed with the beautiful Gulf sea and the Arabian Desert.
Dubai can be a wonderful sea resort with its warm blue water. However, sun bathing is possible only during winters because of the scorching equatorial sun. I had described my stint in the Jumeirah Beach here. Unfortunately we visited the Arab Emirates in October so the sun was not merciful upon us. But that did not deter us, the sea freaks from getting dipped in the sea!! My parents chose to stay in the hotel; so when we returned, they were shocked to see us fully sun burnt!!

My mother in law accuses me of tanning her fair son repeatedly whenever we take a beach vacation (which we often do ) :D. Anyways, I do not mind burnt skin as long as I have the privilege to play in the sea!!
After our dip in the warm waters, we went for a stroll on the deserted beach. Nobody else was crazy enough to to be found there!! Then we went to Deira City Centre for shopping. It was  a hot but amazing afternoon.

crystal clear water...

as tall as the Burj Khalifa..

getting further burnt in the sun...

the board says it all...

Matar Bin Fadil mosque..

in front of the metro station...

the famous Sheikh Zayed Road..along which are all the skyscrapers...

with the 'Nol' card meaning fare in Arabic..

wish I could have this giant shoe!!

With the mercury dropping day by day,we Delhiites are

craving more and more for the sun. WE are lucky that in spite of low temperatures, the mornings are devoid of the thick, dense fog that Delhi is infamous for. The winds are chilly but the shining sun makes up for it.

Delhi winters are perfect for day excursions. This Sunday after lunch I went out for exploring Lutyen’s Delhi with my permanent co traveler…my husband :D

After Delhi was made the capital of India in 1911, (the former capital being Calcutta ) it was designed by a British architect, Edwin Lutyens.

Lutyens laid out the central administrative area of the city. At the heart of the city was the impressive Rashtrapati Bhawan, formerly known as Viceroy's House, located on the top of Raisina Hill. The Rajpath, also known as King's Way, connects India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhawan, while Janpath, which crosses it at a right angle, connects South end road (renamed as Rajesh Pilot marg) with Connaught Place. The President of India  stays in the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the official house.

The Secretariat Building, which houses various ministries of the Government of India including Prime Minister's Office are beside the Rashtrapati Bhawan and were designed by Herbert Baker. Also designed by Baker was the Parliament House, located on the Sansad Marg, running parallel with the Rajpath. Other architects designed other buildings such as the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals. Before the new imperial capital New Delhi was established in 1911, the Old Delhi Railway Station served the Agra-Delhi railways, the line cut through what is today called Lutyens' Delhi. The line was eventually shifted to make way for the new capital and the New Delhi Railway Station was built near Ajmeri Gate in 1926.
