Pedestrian's guide to Dhiffushi island, Maldives

by - 4/18/2023

If you are a regular reader of this blog or might have read a single post, I am sure you have gotten the idea that we are all for experiencing local culture while travelling. Which means most of the time staying in Air B n Bs, using public transport or self driving and of course visiting the less touristy and more local areas. So our agenda was the same during our Maldives trip too. Instead of booking a 5 star resort for our entire trip, we broke out trip into 2: local island and a resort island.

We chose Dhiffushi to witness the Maldivian style of living. Now Dhiffushi is a tiny island; so tiny that we used to encircle it everyday. There are of course no cars here, only motorbikes and bicycles. So here is a pedestrian guide as to see what all they have in this mesmerizing tropical island.

1. Public Beach: The public beach hardly has any public (the population is really sparse) and it would feel like your very own. The water is turquoise and crystal clear when you go in. The sand is silver and the softest that has ever touched your feet. One thing to be taken care of: bikinis and alcohol are not allowed on the public beach. You should always respect local culture while travelling.

2. Rashu Hiya Hotel: I am not advising you go inside this boutique hotel but to enjoy this area. There are cute boutique cafes here, restaurants which serve good food, quaint souvenir shops and of course a big Dhoni where you can take pictures. The styling here is too good!

3. Crown Beach Hotel: Again no need to go to this hotel but the beach here has some great styling. Swaying coconut trees with swings, just like you see in pictures. Also the Meeru Island resort in the backdrop provides stunning sea scape.

4. I ❤️ Dhiffushi sunset point: This is not to be missed. There is a framed swing with I ❤️ Dhiffushi sign that looks straight into the sea. You can witness the sun going down in the sea from this point. However if you want a good picture in the swing with the ocean in backdrop, then you have to come in the morning so that the sun falls on your face.

5. Butterfly sign: There is a life-size butterfly mural that everyone takes a picture with.

6. Dhiffushi port and pier: You have to pass through this place while boarding and de boarding the ferry. But it would be better if you come here again outside the boat timing. The vibe here is beautiful and you can see big ships sailing in the turquoise ocean. At night, the sea twinkles from so many vessels sailing.

7. Dhiffushi school and football ground. It's fascinating how a tiny island like Dhiffushi has its own school. It's really commendable because the children don't have to go far. Also Maldivians are crazy about football. You can see matches happening in the stadium even during late night!

The island is absolutely picturesque and you would find intriguing, pretty things in every nook and corner. It was a delight staying in this tropical paradise!

  9. Unlike your other posts Mandira, where u take us on a virtual tour, this one was more matter of fact. Still, I enjoyed reading it and loved the accompanying pics too. Dhiffushi seems to be a secluded beach place where u will have a private time with your travel partners. There are not many places outthere that gives u that kind of privacy in that budget.... kaveri.
