The temple and its existence are associated with a legend that has many versions. The most popular version says that around 150 to 200 years ago, there was a flood in Kosi River and in that flood, a rock came tumbling towards the Garjiya Village. It is believed that Bhairav Dev stopped the rock and ever since, Goddess Parvati, worshipped as Girija Devi in the village, has been residing in the rock.
Another version goes like this: when Kosi River flooded, a devotee of Lord Shiva asked his sister Garjiya to marry the river and reside in it. Obeying his wish, Garjiya married Kosi and started residing at the rock, which stopped the flood. The locals say that since then, there has never been a flood in Kosi River. You may get to hear these legends and many other stories about the village and its famous temple on your family vacation to Jim Corbett. Make sure that your kids are with you when a local is narrating these stories; after all, who enjoys stories more than children!
