Trastevere, Rome

Across the Tevere river..

The magical thing about Italy is that all the names that you read and know before change their names as soon you land in Italy! Yes in Italy, every name is in Italian. Some names are quite similar and easy to decipher while others need brain storming or an insight into Italian language! eg Rome is Roma, Colosseum is Colosseo. On the tougher part is Scala Di Spagna! Any guesses? Its Spanish Steps!! Similarly, the river which drains the city is Tiber river. But in Italiano its Fiume Tevere. The river divides the city into two parts, the part across the river is called Trastevere.

We had been exploring Rome from 6 am and had covered almost all the major parts. I had been mesmerised by the innumerable fountains...The Trevi Fountain especially. I had seen it in so many movies since childhood that it was a dream come true for me. After visiting the Pantheon, we headed to the Piazza Navona. Since it was almost midday, the piazza was bustling with tourists. One thing about Roma, it was crazily crowded! I mean we were in the peak tourist season, but I had never imagined it to be so so populated! The Piazza Navona had three fountains with beautiful sculpture all around. We rested there for a while and then decided to cross the river and proceed towards Vatican City.
The main fountain at the Piazza Navona. The fountain of Four rivers or Fonatana dei quattro fiumi
World famous sculpture by Giacomo Della Porta
The Piazza Navona is an excellent example of Baroque Roman architecture. There is an Egyptian Obelisk in the middle with the Fountain of four rivers. Its an open form of a stadium where the ancient Romans gathered to watch games or agones. This Piazza has featured in various films including Angels and Demons.
Look at the magnificence of the buildings and fountains. This is the Fountain of Neptue at the Northern end...
Every statue is different... The Fontana Del Moro at the Southern end...

We crossed the Tavere river and saw the magnificent architecture of the Supreme Court. Although there was a bridge to cross the river, we spotted steps going down. As adventurous we are, we decided to walk along the river. It was midday and the sun had no mercy on us. It was scalding hot the breeze from the river was really soothing. We walked and walked. It was deserted. The few pocals whome we spotted along the way looked at us as if we were crazy! After a while we realised our foolishness. We found steps to reach the main road and we climbed up.

Can you see the Vatican city in the backdrop?

As soon as we climbed up, we could see The Vatican City at a distance. I got really excited but that is again in another post :)

Crossing the bridge to reach the Vatican...pay attention to the little structures on the bridge..
